I have a pretty specific offer, but there are so many rad people on here maybe I’ll find a good match!

So we are escaping the city, for a great little piece of land north of Oshawa. The whole property is a fixer upper to put mildly, and I’ll need help with a) removing some invasive species and b) cleaning up some garbage in the woods. There is a great spot to camp on the property next to a stream, and with campsites being shut down, I’m proposing a trade of camping for some help. I’m thinking about an hour of help per night of camping?

You: 
1) have your own transportation
2) are an experienced camper (have all your equipment, know how to safely manage a fire, etc)
3) know about identifying invasive species- right now I see so many gypsy moth eggs and patches of garlic mustard
4) are chill

I don’t have any amenities, so you’ll have to bring your water (we are fixing our well system, can refill water when that is done), and we will provide a thunderbox but you’ll have to pack out your own waste. If you don’t know what I mean then maybe this isn’t for you, or Google it to see if it is. No dogs, sorry. I also do not want any foraging on the property.

Social distancing a must, this is a great chance to escape either solo or with your household. There are some larger conservation areas close by if you want to go for a bigger hike.

Camping

Vintage. For flower arrangements or I have used it as a pot. I love it but I haven’t seem to have found a good place for it in a while. Maybe it’s time it finds a new home?

This is garlic mustard and it’s super a invasive plant from Europe. Invasive means it takes over, pushing out native plants, and insects and animals don’t eat it so it doesn’t provide any benefit to the eco system. A single plant can produce 1000 seeds. And southern Ontario has a real problem with it!

It is edible, so google recipes! You can make it into a pesto and if you get a big one it’s roots can be made into a horse radish like substance.

When you pull it throw it in the trash, as it’s roots and seeds can survive most composting methods. 

If you are going for a walk in the ravines around Toronto, pull them and throw them out in the black bins provided. It feels good to help! Even if you just get a few plants that can remove thousands of potential seeds.

Make sure if you camp or hike to clean your shoes, gear, and even car tires to stop the spread of invasives.

Hello!

I just wanted to talk about how you can easily get decorative grass heads AND help nature by using invasive phragmites. Don’t spend your money on Pampas grass at stores.

There are lots of tutorials out there in how to bleach or dye the seed heads. You can make tiki roofs, weave baskets, lamps and matts. They are a free resource and you’d be helping! (As long as you make sure you aren’t spreading the seeds or root systems to other places...)

Phragmites are a kind of grass, and some introduced species are really a problem as they out compete native species. This causes a few issues because bugs and animals take a long time to adapt and do not eat the invasive species. This throws things out of balance and creates “dead zones” where there is no insects or wildlife. There are native phragmites and you want to leave them alone to do their thing... you can learn more here:

Black Friday

I make it high in protein/omegas. This is honey, vanilla, cardamom with a hint of ginger.

Ingredients: GF Oats, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, hemp hearts, coconut flakes, sunflower seeds. Coconut and none-GMO canola oil, maple syrup, honey.

Made in a gluten-free household, but I bake and cook a lot with eggs, nuts, dairy so not suitable for severe allergies. 

We ear this like crazy in our house, so not desperate to trade but I thought I would put it up for trade purposes for items I need/want. Value is about $10 a jar, I could offer larger size for bigger trades, etc.

Such a great shoe for the office, but it is a size 39 (size 8.5-9) and I’m a 40 now. Sigh. First picture is the stock photo but in brown, mine are black and go with almost everything.

Vegetable tanned leather, made in Spain, very, very comfortable. Good conditions, needs new laces and a clean. Some scratches in the leather from my toddler being a terror while I was trying to post this. 😣
