Antique / vintage Hand Forged in Scotland golf clubs ⛳️

Description

Made by R.J. Gibson of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. Hand forged in Scotland. A few different clubs available. Most likely from the 1920s or 1930s based on available information making these around 100 years old! Very early steel shaft clubs from an era when most golf club shafts were still made from wood. Shafts are still straight and not rusty.

Some info I found on the club maker:

“Robert James Gibson was one of four sons, with William, Charles and John, who served as assistants to their father Charles Gibson at Royal North Devon and in his clubmaking business.

Born there in 1890, Robert was still working at Westward Ho! when the First World War broke out and he enlisted early, attesting in September 1914 and assigned to the Devonshire Regiment before being posted to India the following month and seving with the Indian Expeditionary Force. February and March of 1915 he spent in hospital with ‘rupture of the muscles’ of the peroneus longus (back of the leg). He went with the IEF to Basra (moderm Iraq) in 1916 and was invalided back to India in May of that year after being treated for bronchitis in the field. He was discharged in October 1918 on account of being been commissioned in the Indian Army Reserve Officers and posted to Delhi.

Shortly after demobilisation he was appointed professional to the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in January 1920 and returned to India.

He was back in Britain in 1925 and played in the Open Championship at Prestwick but missed the cut after the second round. He was in the draw for qualifying for the 1929 Open at Muirfield but either did not qualify or scratched.

Although he was far from Devon, he was still president of the Northam Artisans club and a competition of theirs for which he had presented cups was reported in 1934 with him still described as the professional at Royal Calcutta. He played in an exhibition fourball against Joe Kirkwood, the Australian professional and trick-shot artist, who was visiting Calcutta in 1935. Robert’s wife, playing at the Calcutta club won an LGU spoon for a round in 1936 so he was probably still professional then but I find no references later than that.”
