Original Nintendo Game Boy with custom backlit screen
The original Game Boy is a fantastic system, but playing one in 2017 is painful. Now that we've all used modern, backlit colour LCDs, the Game Boy's screen looks shockingly dim and blurry.
This Game Boy doesn't have that problem. I've carefully cleaned and refurbished it and installed an LED backlight panel behind the screen, which gives the on-screen image amazing brightness and clarity. I've replaced the scratched plastic screen cover with a high-quality, scratch-resistant glass one. It's like a whole new system—except it isn't. If you want to play the classics on original hardware, this might be a good option for you.
I used a Hand Held Legend V3 Washed Yellow backlight panel. The system also has a Hand Held Legend V2 bivert module installed, which greatly improves screen contrast. This is a fairly clean install—but, as is typical with these Game Boy mods, there are some minor hotspots and moiré swirls on the screen. Bear in mind that this is a hand-rebuilt object. I'm a hobbyist, not an engineer.
Building these costs some money (I have to sacrifice a Game Boy, and the aftermarket parts are all special-order), and it takes a few hours of fairly finicky electronics work. I'm hoping to trade this either for some pretty good Nintendo gear, or for a GC. I'm happy to demo the system for you before we make the trade.
